The long awaited release of Apple Remote Desktop 3 (ARD3), a MAC OS X software management tool that allows users to remotely control other computers on the same network, brings with it an abundance of upgrades — over 50 new features according to Apple.

Remote Desktop, an application popular among IT professionals, allows seamless integration of multiple computers at once. You may, for instance, want to upgrade a particular software on 100 devices in a computer lab. With Remote Desktop, you can upgrade all 100 at once, making mass network management more efficient.

Among the notable improvements found on Remote Desktop 3 is the ability to remotely Spotlight search your entire network of computers. You can find a quick rundown here This means while you are on one computer you may search the hard-drives of others.

In previous versions of ARD only allowed the transfer of files to, but not from, other computers. This is no longer an obstacle with ARD3. It is now possible to copy and paste files back and forth between all computers on your network.

Perhaps the most valuable feature of Remote Desktop 3 is it’s affordability. With the Unlimited Systems management systems edition, it is possible to manage an uncapped amount of client computers — no per-client fees.

Technology has changed the way that individuals perform their jobs. One of the biggest thing that technology has improved is troubleshooting. The ability to remote desktop into computers has saved many companies money and it has also reduced employee downtime.

Help desk technicians, for example, are able to remote desktop into computers and resolve many issues without ever leaving their desks. It’s a simple process that only takes a couple of minutes. PC users that want to access another computer through the remote desktop should click the start menu and go to all programs. From this area they should be able to access a tab for accessories. Under this tab they will find the remote desktop link. (On some versions of Window 7 or Vista the Remote Desktop feature is found inside of System Tools under the Accessories folder.)

Once this tab is found the user can click on the link to open up a small box. At this point the user can type in a IP address and user name to access another system. Technicians that are on a network can type in the host name if they do not have the IP address to access the remote system.

Thechnology has come a long way in the last ten to fifteen years or so. When the computer was first introduced, you had to take it to a repair shop when you experienced problems with it if you did not know what you were doing to fix it yourself. With todays capabilities, the hassle of taking your computer apart to take it to the repair shop and then bring it home to figure out what goes where is no longer necessary. Now your repair man can come to your computer remotely.

TeamViewer is set up so that as long as you can access the internet, you can go into their program and upload it to your computer and once accessed, you get a special identification code and password and then you can call your computer repair man and give them the identification code and password and they enter that information right into their TeamViewer program on their computer and they now have total control over your computer and can go into your system settings and things to see where the issues are and even run virus scans for you if you are not comfortable with doing them yourself. This is time and money saving for everyone involved.

Did you know that getting wireless and cancelling your expensive cellphone data plan can actually save you money? If you’re spending less days commuting into the office you may be saving money on gas, as well.
Plan better. When’s the last time you wish you knew the movie times or could book a restaurant on Open Table? Particularly if you don’t have a smartphone, wireless internet is great for making last minute online adjustments to your schedule.
Get a deal.

As storage space, keyboards, audio/video capability, business applications and overall functionality continue to improve on what we used to know as cell phones, how much longer before smart phones move in on grounds typically reserved for laptops and other mobile PCs?As for now, hybrids such as the iPad have become increasingly popular, the demand for traditional laptops and desktop computers may see a decline in years to come. What is the iPad save for an iPhone with more surface area and without the ability to dial or receive calls? The iPad is effectively a combination of a laptop computer and an iPhone, or in layman’s terms, an oversized iPod touch.Of course, a laptop does offer more sophisticated options in terms of gaming, flash capabilities (as seen in virtually all webpages, not to mention the accuracy of a brick and mortar keyboard vs. a touch screen, along with more practical applications and the ability to multitask when working on business or educational projects. In this opinion, an iPad at this point is a completely wasteful purchase, fun perhaps but ultimately bringing very little utility to the table. Bear in mind, however, this is developers first run at the iPad. Only 5 or 6 years ago, flip phones like the Razr were hip, cool and stylish. In that time, we have already seen flip phones entirely go out of style and be brought back (thank you, Blackberry Pearl Flip). Point is, the technological world turns much faster than the rest of the world at-large.The iPad as it stands may only pose a threat to traditional computer sales in the form of ill-informed consumers beaming with optimism, however, as the iPad and products like it are refined and improved, the very face of personal computing may have completely changed yet again by 2015. Much like the Kyotronic 85 in 1983, though not fully functional, its size, shape and convenience may have long-lasting implications in the mobile computing arena.

Now mobile PC services such as GoToMyPC and LogMeIn allow you to access the files on your personal computer from a remote location using your online account. While this has greatly increased convenience and ease of working remotely, it still requires you to have access to a computer with Internet. Hence, where pocket PCs are gaining popularity. These tiny devices are only slightly bigger than most cell phones, yet have access to Windows software. The combination of mobile PC services and pocket PCs is revolutionizing the way we work and travel. The HP iPAQ Pocket PC H2215 offers everything from wireless connection to Microsoft Word and Excel to Windows Media Player. ActiveSync is a unique feature that can be installed on both this device and another PC so that any files created or edited on one can be accessed on the other. You also have access to Bluetooth technology to allow for wireless communication. The Sprint HTC Mogul is a slim, touch screen device that includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and P2P wireless. An upgrade from predecessors, this device can support Windows Mobile 6. The Mogul also has done away with the unsightly antenna, now using all internal technology.Another well-known Pocket PC is the AT&T Tilt 2. Though this might be better classified as a smart phone, it comes with Windows Mobile 6.5 and therefore earns a mention on our list. A 3.6 inch screen makes for easy viewing and includes a full QWERTY keyboard.Eight GB of memory accompany the Samsung Omnia. With Windows Mobile 6.1 and a GPS receiver, this is one of the best of its kind. Keeping with the latest trend of the industry, the Omnia includes touch screen technology.

With LogMeIn, your personal computer is truly never out of reach, even if you left both it and wallet in some wayward hotel room or resting on your bedside table. That’s right, not only does LogMeIn afford you the ability to access, support and manage your computer from anywhere with an internet conncetion, but the basic LogMeIn program is absolutely free. The only expense is opportunity cost, for economists out there, but with a simple two-minute set up process, there’s really not much else you could get done in that brief allotment (Elways, Mannings and Bradys of the world excluded).First, simply install the program on the computer you want to access, say, for example your laptop. Log into your LogMeIn account from any other computer in the world and just select your laptop as the computer you wish to control. The desktop, icons and applications will all appear on the screen, just as if you had brought your laptop with you.For those who might need more than just the basic package features, LogMeIn Pro offers a few additional capabilities the free version does not. Not only will you still be able to reach your desktop and its functions from afar, Pro allows for document transfer from the original computer to the current computer, file sharing, desktop sharing, and even remote to local printing, so if you leave important documents at home before you fly out on business, you can easily print them out at your hotel or a nearby FedEx Office. Of course, with all the additional features, LogMein Pro comes at a price, available for 69.95 a year.LogMeIn Ignition is a mobile program compatible with not only Windows, but iPhone and iPad, and Android devices, providing remote computer access from anywhere with a clear signal. At 29.99 its one of the pricier apps but well worth it for many savvy travelers.

Have you ever watched a classic hero movie and empathized with the villain hell-bent on world domination? Perhaps then, Stardock Multiplicity is a program that might peak your interest. Its name practically screams “Science Fiction Thriller.” Imagine, James Bond, maybe even Austin Powers, has just burst through you door. Calm and collected you boldly proclaim, “You’ll never capture me, I’ve got (long pause, followed by intense stare into the camera) Stardock Multiplicity.”In all seriousness, Stardock Multiplicity would indeed be the best, most sophisticated program on the market with which to set up an evil lair. Of course, any real mastermind would probably spring for Stardock Multiplicity Pro. The Pro application allows you to control several different computers and monitors by means of a sole keyboard and mouse. With screens abounding in all directions, you could simply play puppet master from a central perch. Realistically, Stardock Multiplicity would be a wise investment for anyone who might need two or more computers in the same room, especially when used in collaboration for a particular project (i.e. graphic design layout on one, complex 3D imaging on the other), as the program allows you to seamlessly work with both of them, without swapping out keyboards and mice, not to mention a shared clipboard between the two devices. If you’ve ever worked with dual monitors, you will note a similar feel when using Stardock Multiplicity. The additional benefit of Stardock Multiplicity is that not only do you have significantly more surface area on which to work in terms monitor space, but the full power and functionality of each additional computer as well. The basic Stardock Multiplicity program, designed for dual computer set-ups is, priced at 29.95, with an upgraded Pro version available for 39.95. For the additional 10, the Pro program can control up to 6 auxiliary computers in addition to the main computer.

Web Conferencing has the potential to revolutionize how any company does business. Just like remote computer control programs can give access to personal computers from across the globe, web conferencing affords access to clients and colleagues spread out in far away offices across the country. Furthermore, sophisticated web conferencing programs allow for more than just “instant message” type communication. For example, GoToMeeting from Citrix, arguably the most sophisticated web conferencing program in the marketplace, allows all meeting participants to collaborate on pieces of work (in real time) by sharing desktops across computers, giving you remote access to client and colleague’s PC’s as well as their shining faces. This helps to increase productivity and create a more authentic virtual conference room feel, with papers, documents and business what-have-you’s easily within reach of any participant.GoToMeeting allows for meetings with up to 15 members in any individual session, all of whom can access the software from Windows, Macs, even iPads. The program is generally renowned for its user friendly interface, making it easy to host or join meetings online. Perhaps the largest concern with web conferencing as opposed to setting up shop in an actual conference room is the additional risk of technical difficulty. By all accounts, GoToMeeting is practically kink free, providing as reliable a space as its 4 walled counterparts. Aside from reliability, GoToMeeting provides a host of other benefits you might not think possible in the online realm, including live products demonstrations in real time, instant presenter interchange and fully integrated whiteboards with drawing tools. If you find yourself in need of a bigger virtual space (especially now that people make so many online friends), GoToMeeting’s Webinars are able to “seat” 1,000 attendees. GoToMeeting Standard costs 49 per month or an annual fee of 468.00 (20 savings). For Webinar capabilities, the cost rises to 99 per month or 948.00 annually (also saving 20).
